Before starting this class of college writing 1101 I thought about all the tough assignments and papers we would probably get assigned and thinking how will I ever keep up and pass this class. After taking the big jump from the shallow end of regular English, into the deep end of “college” English has put many new initial reactions in my mind.
I started this class late because of my transfer from Sebeka, where I thought this class was going to be way harder than the one in Sebeka since I hadn’t known who was going to be teaching the class and how they graded on assignments. It turned out to easier than I thought; not saying this class is easy, but compared to what my mind was thinking. Being in college witting the two weeks I’ve been here for, I would say my observations are different than my classmates because I missed almost a whole week of class before I transferred and then two weeks from getting sick. So I haven’t spent a whole lot of time in the class room exactly, but I’ve still gotten all the same assignments. This was kind of hard to catch up on because I missed out on all the instructions explained by Mr. Hensch. But I managed to catch up on most things except trying to set up my website. Making my website on my own was probably the toughest thing I had to do, just because I’m not an expert with computers and technology. So I waited to do all that when I returned to class.
On the other hand the class was to do three papers while I was gone, and one was with a partner. That paper was the candy wars paper. So I just improvised and had my younger brother help me out by playing the role of the other candy bar. The other two papers where not to complicated to figure out, except assignment #3. This was a group type argument except I had no group on a count that I was not in class, so I just had to come up with a topic and do an argument paper four-six pages long.
Having been back in class I’ve been able to actually have more reactions to the class and students. I think this class is a great learning experience for me to do before college since I’m not a strong writer; it helps me practice my writing skills. And for those students who look at it as just a difficult class that I would rather take when they are in college, should really consider taking it now, in high school. Taking this class before going to college teaches you how to better your writing which will help in college and also it will ready you for the college experience.
My initial reaction to the class that it is a great learning experience before going off to college and I don’t think anything should be changed because it already is at a good tempo and being taught very well. Maybe the only thing I would change is that I would have been here the whole time. I would advise students to sign up for this class because it is a very beneficial class to take.
